Walk through any well-designed shade garden in July, and the odds are good that begonias are doing most of the heavy lifting. Not because they are the only option — there are plenty of shade-tolerant plants — but because they are the ones actually blooming. Siting and Planting: Light Is the Variable That Cannot Be Corrected Later

Once you have chosen the right type, the placement decision comes next — and light is the variable that matters most. You can amend soil. You can adjust watering. You cannot move a bed that faces west once the plants are in it.
